Akalewa is a Hawaiian word for a movement in hula, meaning to sway the hips gracefully. This flower was swaying in the wind from side to side, like a graceful dancer, when I saw her. Luckily, I managed to capture her in a rare moment of calm.

I spent two decades in front of the camera as a TV reporter and anchor. It wasn't until I retired from news that I picked up a camera myself, and fell in love. Now, instead of reporting on the frightening, the frustrating and the tragic sides of life, I get to focus in on the beauty that surrounds me in Hawaii. Much of my photography centers on flowers in our tropical island paradise, which are plentiful, vibrant and popping with color. Lucky me.
